Subtitles are downloaded from the huge database of subtitles at opensubtitles.org. As subtitles are contributed to opensubtitles by volunteers, the time it takes for subtitles to become available after a movie release can vary.

Truly an amazing app. As the top review mentions, very useful for finding subtitles in a different language. Amazing.
Netflix & Prime often don’t display subtitles for international films in the original language. Often in the US English subtitles are what you get. This app worked perfectly & synched perfectly with French films I’ve been watching. So impressed.
